The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday, January 25, said cigarette butts topped the majority of trash found in Metro Manila based on its Anti-Littering Apprehension Report last year.
MMDA showed that 79 percent of individuals, which translates to 12,918, were caught throwing cigarette butts along the metro’s roads.
Papers trailed behind with 1,524 individuals caught while candy wrappers took the third spot with 1,343 individuals.
MMDA underscored that these pieces of trash risk drainage clogging, urging the public to be responsible citizens by throwing their trash in its respective bins.
The agency added that under MMDA Regulation No. 96-009 or Anti-Littering Law, anyone caught throwing trash in public places would be fined P500 to P1,000 or sentenced to community service.
