MMDA releases alternative routes for affected motorists on SONA day

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday released a traffic management plan which contains the alternative routes that affected motorists can take on June 24, the day when President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. will deliver his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Batasang Pambansa, Quezon City.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, MMDA said it will implement a zipper lane or counterflow on the southbound portions of Commonwealth Ave. in Quezon City during the SONA day.

The agency said it will install a traffic advisory signage and put up plastic barriers and traffic cones along the zipper lane for affected motorists' guide.

The following are the alternative routes stated in the agency's traffic management plan:

Northbound (Quezon Memorial Circle to Fairview)

MMDA said motorists coming from Elliptical Road must take North Avenue, right turn at Mindanao Avenue, then right turn to Sauyo Road or take Quirino Highway to reach the point of destination.

Northbound (Quezon Memorial Circle to Fairview via Marikina)

Light vehicles coming from C5 Road are advised to turn left at Magiting St., turn right at Maginhawa St., and turn left at Mayaman St. to Kalayaan Avenue to reach the point of destination.

Southbound (Fairview to Quezon Memorial Circle)

Vehicles coming from Commonwealth Ave. should take Sauyo Road or Quirino Highway, turn left at Mindanao Ave., then turn left at North Ave. to reach the point of destination

Meanwhile, small and large trucks coming from C-5 along Katipunan Ave. are directed to take Luzon Flyover and then turn left at Congressional Ave. to reach the point of destination.

At least 1,354 MMDA personnel will be deployed during the SONA day.

The agency said the personnel are assigned to manage vehicular and pedestrian traffic; assist in emergency response; conduct road and sidewalk clearing operations; assist with crowd control; traffic monitoring; and support the operations of the Task Force SONA 2023,

A “no day off, no absent” policy is enforced among personnel, MMDA noted.
