Misamis Occidental governor Henry Oaminal on Sunday, Nov. 5 strongly denounced the brutal killing of a radio broadcaster in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Oaminal said he was astounded by the killing of Juan Jumalon, best known by his nickname Johnny Walker, who is a radio broadcaster in 94.7 Calamba Gold FM.

“I am shocked and I am in grief, as I denounce in the strongest terms, the untimely death of radioman Juan Jumalon alias Johnny Walker who was brutally killed while doing his media work at about 05:35 this morning, November 5, 2023,” he said.

“Having known this man as a fearless broadcaster, I share the grief of his family and the people of my province for we lost a truth crusader,” Oaminal added.

The Misamis Occidental governor ordered Misamis Occidental Provincial Police Office (PPO) Director Col. Dwight Monato “to leave no stone unturned in the investigation of this case."

He said he trusts “that truth will prevail and justice will be served.”

“To the people of Misamis Occidental, let us continue to be vigilant and unite to protect each other as one people. We will rise above all these challenges of our time,” Oaminal said.

Aside from Jumalon's case, the Misamis Occidental governor ordered probe into the other reported incidents in Misamis Occidental.

In a closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained by DZRH, an unidentified suspect was caught barging in the 94.7-Calamba Gold FM booth and shot the victim while he was in the middle of an on-air program through Facebook Live.

The shooting reportedly occurred at around 5:35 AM.

Jumalon is now the fourth journalist killed under the administration of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., following Percival Mabasa or Percy Lapid, Renato Blanco, and Cresenciano Aldovino Bunduquin.
