Metro Manila traffic ranked the worst in 387 metro areas in the world, according to a study by the TomTom Traffic Index.

It defined a Metro area as a circle covering the city and rural areas nearby which “measures the traffic of the entire region.”

The study revealed that Manila had an average travel time of 25 minutes and 30 seconds per 10 kilometers in 2023, a 50-second increase from last year’s.

The city also has a congestion level of 52 percent with 117 hours lost every year during rush hours and an average speed of 19 kilometers per hour in rush hour.

Manila was followed by Lima (Peru), Bengaluru (India), Sapporo (Japan), Bogota (Colombia), Mumbai (India), Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Pune (India), and Nagoya (Japan).

According to the TomTom Traffic Index, it aimed to “rank these cities based on their average travel time and provide free access to city-by-city information.”

Through a selection of 387 cities in 55 countries and six continents, the study also measured the financial impact of fuel costs, traffic congestion, fuel per kilometer per consumption, and CO2 emissions of petrol, diesel, or Battery Electric Vehicles cars.
