The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced a rate increase of ₱0.64 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for electricity this March, citing higher generation and transmission charges.
The adjustment is expected to translate to higher monthly bills for households. For example, a household consuming 200 kWh would see an increase of ₱129 this month.
Estimated impact on monthly bills:
Zaldarriaga clarified that the increase is not linked to rising global oil prices due to the Middle East crisis.
He noted that the effects of higher petroleum costs may only be reflected in electricity bills in April or May.
The power distributor also noted that electricity rates are expected to rise in the coming months, as higher oil prices drive up the cost of coal and natural gas—the primary fuels for many power plants in Luzon.
JUST IN: Inanunsyo ng Meralco ang P0.64/kwh na taas-singil sa kuryente ngayong Marso na dahil umano sa generation at transmission charges.
