The Philippines added to its medal tally in the ongoing 32nd Southeast Asian Games, capturing several more silver and bronze medals in various events on Saturday, May 6.
In karate, Junna Tsukii settled for the silver medal after losing to Malaysia’s Chandran Shahmalarani in a closely contested match.
Despite feeling that she got the short end of the deal, the reigning World Games champion was gracious in defeat and congratulated her opponent on the win.
The Philippines also captured a silver medal in ouk chaktrang-Cambodian chess women’s doubles, with Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna and Woman International Master Shania Mae Mendoza formalizing their claim to the runner-up spot.
In swimming, the Philippine women's quartet of Teia Salvino, Miranda Renner, Xiandi Chua, and Olympian Jasmine Alkhaldi secured a silver medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay, finishing second behind the winning team from Thailand.
Meanwhile, Filipino tanker Jerard Jacinto posted a new national record in the men's 100-meter backstroke event as he clinched a bronze medal.
His time of 55.99 seconds beat his previous national record set in the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships in Budapest.
The Philippines also captured three more bronze medals in jiu-jitsu, with Myron Mangubat winning in men's ne-waza -62kg, Raymond Villaraza Jr. and Jayson Cayari settling for a bronze medal in Jiu-jitsu Men's Show event, and Rhenel Guillermo Desuyo finishing third in the men’s 65kg category of vovinam, a Vietnamese traditional martial art.
Filipina Vovinam athlete Jerlyn Kingad also added another bronze medal for Team Philippines in the Women's 55kg category, while Jovan Medallo took the bronze medal in the Men's Sun-Moon Broadsword Form of Vovinam.
