The state seismologist has logged a total of 257 rockfall events and one volcanic earthquake in Mayon Volcano, Albay from 5 AM on July 3 to 5 AM on July 4.
Based on its latest bulletin, the restive volcano’s number of rockfalls has slightly declined from 295 to 257, while the volcanic earthquake was down from 3 to 1.
The lava coming from the Mayon Volcano’s summit crater has reached a length of 2,800 from the previous 2,700 recorded on Mi-si Gully.
Meanwhile, the lava remains 1,300 meters long on Bonga Gully from the summit crater.
Phivolcs also observed 6 dome-collapse pyroclastic density currents (PDC) that lasted 3 minutes as well as 1 lava front collapse (PDC) that generated light-brown plumes with 300 meters of height.
“Continuous moderate degassing from the summit crater produced steam-laden plumes that rose 200 meters before drifting to the west-northwest and west-southwest direction,” the state seismologist said.
Mount Mayon also emitted 1,558 tonnes of sulfur dioxide since July 3.
Interviewed by DZRH, Phivolcs Volcanologist Paul Karson Alanis said there is a possibility of evacuating residents in the Municipalities of Daraga, Legaspi, and Sto. Domingo.
Alanis explained that evacuation is possible once the PDC reaches six kilometers long.
“Kahit naka-Alert Level 3, kapag umabot po ng six kilometer bound ‘yung mga pyroclastic density currents, maari nating irekomenda na kahit ‘yung mga nasa seven at eight ay mag-evacuate na po,” he said.
Mayon Volcano has been under Alert Level 3 since June 8 due to the ”increased tendency towards a hazardous eruption.”
