Mary Jane Veloso may be allowed parole on account of the GCTA or Good Conduct Time Allowance, said the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Aside from receiving executive clemency, Veloso may also be released on parole due to good conduct, said Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez, after explaining that her transfer to the Philippines subjects her to Philippine law and regulations concerning Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).
“Here ang custody, she would be subjected to all those regulations and processes of the Philippine government that are accorded to any and ordinary Persons Deprived of Liberty,” he said during a press conference. “Pati nga yung bagong-pirma namin na good conduct time allowance … isa pang magandang regalo.”
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. said his agency will be creating a group assigned to studying Veloso’s case, to see whether she qualifies for parole. RH 52 Edniel Parrosa reported that her conduct in Indonesia will be taken into account.
Parole is the temporary or permanent release of a prisoner before they have fully served their sentence, on the premise that they maintain good behavior.
