President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for a unified effort between disaster management offices and local government units to focus on science-based solutions for disaster response.
In his speech at the 24th Gawad KALASAG National Awarding Ceremony on Friday, Marcos stressed the importance of continuously improving the country's disaster risk reduction and management system to effectively address evolving challenges.
This includes the individual responsibility of every citizen to adopt proactive, vigilant, and adaptable strategies for the safety of their communities.
“I once again call on the NDRRMC and all other concerned agencies and the LGUs – our always our first responders – to continue working together to develop innovative solutions that are science-based, that are sustainable, and are future-ready, and establish clear guidelines for more effective disaster-response,” said Marcos.
Marcos further mentioned that disaster response initiatives should be guided by the “Build Back Better” strategy in the areas of recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.
During the event, several "modern heroes" were recognized for their contributions to climate change and disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) through innovative policies, technological advancements, and transformative strategies.
Among the initiatives highlighted were the establishment of 911 on Call Incorporated, the Pailaw at Pabahay Program for rebuilding homes in impoverished areas, and a mobile vaccination drive for remote barangays.
The recognition program honored stakeholders for their efforts in promoting disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and humanitarian assistance initiatives.
