President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to embark on an official visit to the United States from April 30 to May 4.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), this visit seeks to reaffirm the long-standing ties between the Philippines and the United States.

During his second visit, Marcos is expected to promote the Philippines' economic agenda and explore opportunities for collaboration in various sectors.

Strengthen ties

Marcos has a busy schedule during his visit, including a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden on May 1.

The White House has announced that Biden will reaffirm the United States' commitment to the defense of the Philippines during their meeting.

In addition to his meeting with the American leader, Marcos will also hold an "expanded meeting" with key Cabinet officials and legislators, according to DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza.

Economic agenda

The chief executive is expected to cover a range of topics during his discussions with US officials, including agriculture, energy, climate change, digital transformation, technology, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, supply chains, and infrastructure.

However, the focus of this trip will be on economic matters, and Marcos will meet with various companies to promote the Philippines as both a trading partner and an investment market.

“He will also meet with different companies where he will actually be able to promote the Philippines, both as a trading partner, as well as investment market,” said the official.

Security and peace

Marcos will also discuss security and defense issues, particularly concerning the South China Sea, with US officials.

Daza said that Marcos will promote Philippine interests and the country's desire for the waters to be a sea of peace, security, stability, and prosperity.

Marcos will also count on the US to support Philippine efforts in enhancing maritime cooperation, upholding international law and freedom of navigation and overflight, and promoting sustainable development of marine resources.

"I cannot preempt, [but] the president will underscore what we want the waters to be. And we want the waters, particularly the South China Sea and West Philippine Sea, to be a sea of peace, security, stability, and prosperity,” she said.

Business leaders, Filipino community

Aside from his official meetings, Marcos will speak to major US companies and top business leaders to promote the Philippines as a place to invest and do business.

The president will also deliver a "major policy speech" before a think tank in Washington, although details about this engagement have yet to be released.

Marcos may also schedule an event for members of the Filipino community during his visit to the United States.
