Gov't mulls acquiring first-ever submarine, says Marcos

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Friday bared that the national government is planning to acquire the first-ever submarine in the country.

In an interview with reporters on the sidelines of the 125th Anniversary of the Philippine Navy, Marcos said the plan is "still being developed" as he noted that the operation is a "large commitment."

"Because the training that is involved, the equipment that is involved, and the operational requirements that are involved are quite significant," he added.

The President said the government is presently focusing on developing the country's anti-submarine capabilities.

"Hopefully when the time comes and the conditions are agreeable, then we might be able to acquire those submarines," Marcos said.

He said that several nations have already offered a completely-built submarines, and they also offered to physically build one in the country.

The President noted that the acquisition of the submarines will provide a source of jobs and income, and also boost the capability of the Philippine Navy.
