Indonesian President Joko Widodo gave his commitment to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to reexamine the case of Filipina death row prisoner Mary Jane Veloso, the Palace said Thursday.
When asked if the President received Widodo's commitment regarding the case, Presidential Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil confirmed that Marcos did during their meeting at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday.
"Yes, with the decision of the Indonesian government to look into the case filed by Mary Jane Veloso in the Philippines," she said.
Widodo is currently in the Philippines as part of his three-day official visit.
During the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit held in Indonesia last May 2023, Marcos also asked Widodo to revisit Veloso's case as a "favor to the Philippines."
Veloso was arrested in Yogyakarta in 2010 after allegedly carrying a suitcase packed with more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin and was sentenced to death the same year.
In September 2022 the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) requested Indonesia to pardon Veloso.
