President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday rejected the imposition of a total ban on the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Kuwait.
In an interview with the media, he said he is not comfortable with the idea of a total deployment ban of OFWs to the said country.
“I don’t want to burn any bridges kasi baka in the future, baka a few months from now, a year from now, magbago ang sitwasyon. Baka pwede pa tayo magpadala ng ating mga workers sa Kuwait,” Marcos said
“Sometimes overreaction yung ban kasi ban nalang tayo ng ban, hindi rin naman tama,” he added.
The President said the proper reaction is to accept the Kuwaiti government’s decision, adding that leaving the situation to them is the best thing to do.
He assured that the Philippine government will “continue to negotiate” and “consult” with the Kuwait government, hoping that the situation will be different and continue to improve.
Earlier this May, the Kuwait government halted the issuance of new entry visas for Filipinos coming to the Gulf state until further notice.
According to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the Kuwait Interior Ministry said it would “continue halting the issuance of any types of visas for the Philippines nationals as Manila rejected Kuwait’s conditions aimed to prevent recurrence of worker violations.”
In February, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) banned the deployment of first-time workers to Kuwait after the death of Jullebee Ranara, a domestic helper who was killed by her employer's son.
