President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, June 12 led the nation in commemorating the 127th Philippine Independence Day at Rizal Park, emphasizing the importance of defending freedom, democracy, and national dignity amid the evolving challenges of the modern era.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional flag-raising at Rizal Park in Manila, followed by the wreath-laying at the monument of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

The event was witnessed by top government officials and foreign dignitaries, underscoring its significance to the country’s identity and sovereignty.

In his keynote address, President Marcos reflected on the continued relevance of independence, reminding public officials and citizens alike of their role in upholding democratic values.

“Ang totoong kalaban ng kalayaan ay ang pagiging manhid. Manhid sa hinaing ng taumbayan, manhid sa kalagayan ng ating kapwa, manhid sa kapakanan ng ating bansa,” Marcos said in his message for this year’s commemoration of Rizal Day.

Marcos reminded public servants of their duty to honor the trust given to them by the people.

“Pananagutan, ‘yan ang sigaw ng sambayanan,” he stated.

Following the commemorative rites, the “Parada ng Kalayaan 2025” was held at the Quirino Grandstand, which featured not only a military parade but also highlighted significant moments in the country's struggle for freedom, aiming to instill national pride and historical awareness.

Marcos also paid tribute to the sacrifices of countless heroes whose courage laid the foundation of the nation, stressing the sacrifices should not only be remembered but be actively honored through responsible citizenship and meaningful service to others.

He pointed out the everyday struggles of Filipinos—from broken infrastructure and rising prices to lack of electricity and basic services and urged government officials to be swift, efficient, and compassionate in addressing public needs.

“Pananagutin natin hindi lang ang umaabuso sa tungkulin, maging ang mga pagkukulang sa paglilingkod, dahil madadama ng mga Pilipino ang kalayaan kung may pagkain sa hapag, may maayos na transportasyon, may gamot para sa may sakit, at may dignidad ang bawat manggagawa,” Marcos asserted.

The President also warned against threats to freedom in the digital age, noting how misinformation and divisive narratives can undermine national unity and values.

“If we look at what is happening to the world today, freedom is fleeting. Fake news and misinformation, herd mentality can erase our way of life, our culture, our value system that we hold so dear,” he said.

“Ang mga kasinungalingan walang hangganan, mga balitang walang katotohanan at maling impormasyon, ito ang salot sa ating kalayaan,” Marcos added.

He called on Filipinos to remain vigilant, discerning, and united in the face of these challenges.

“Piliin natin na manindigan lalo na kung may nagkakamali. Piliin natin ang pagkakaisa sa gitna ng pagkakaiba,”

Marcos closed his speech with a rallying cry to all Filipinos, that the courage shown by our ancestors must continue as the nation defends itself against those who seek to weaken it.
