President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has issued a proclamation declaring every Nov. 28 as National Bike-to-Work Day in a bid to raise awareness on the viability of cycling as a mode of transportation.

Under Proclamation No. 409 dated Nov. 28 but released only on Nov. 30, Marcos cited that the new normal in this post-pandemic "requires the adoption of measures to enable safe, independent, physically-distanced travel, especially for essential workers, so that the country is better prepared in the event of another health emergency."

"There is a need to raise public awareness on the viability of cycling as a mainstream mode of transportation in order to further improve cycling infrastructure in the country," he added.

The President has mandated the Inter-Agency Technical Working Group on Active Transport (IATWG-AT) of the Department of Health (DOH) to coordinate with relevant non-government organizations and civil society groups to "lead, coordinate, and supervise the observance of the National Bike-to-Work Day, and identify the programs, projects, and activities for the yearly celebration thereof."

Marcos also encourages other national government agencies and instrumentalities, local government units, and the private sector "to provide the necessary assistance and support to the DOH and the IATWG-AT for the effective implementation" of National Bike-to-Work Day.

The proclamation was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin for the President.
