President-elect Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. will be allowed to visit the United States given his immunity as a head of state, a US envoy said Thursday.

US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman told reporters during a roundtable discussion following his meeting with Marcos.

"The fact is, when you’re a head of state, you have immunity in all circumstances and are welcome to the United States in your official role," she said.

Back in 2012, a US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit handed down a $353-million contempt order against his family for violating an injunction that barred them from dissipating assets of the estate.

However, having diplomatic immunity as a head of state only covers Marcos Jr. and not his family.

Sherman and Marcos Jr. met on Thursday, with both agreeing "on the importance of partnering together to strengthen our economies, including the importance of public-private partnerships, clean energy, and our digital economy."
