The Marcos adminsitration on Monday formally launched Media Information Literacy (MIL), a campaign that aims to fight misinformation and disinformation in the country.
During the launching ceremony in Pasay, President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) with government agencies, Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The MIL campaign is also a collaboration of the government with social media platforms including Meta, Google, Tiktok, and X or formerly known as Twitter.
In her speech, PCO Secretary Cheloy Garafil said the MIF campaign will cater to the youth who are the most exposed in the digital landscape.
"Sa pamamagitan ng Media and Information Literacy Campaign, bibigyan natin sila ng mga kasangkapan upang kritikal na makapagsuri at makapagvalidate ng mga pinagmulan ng mga impormasyon, at malaman ang pinagkaiba ng mga mapanlinlang na kasinungalingan mula sa katotohanan," she said.
Garafil said they will also bring the MIF to schools and local communities to enable them to "navigate the digital world with discernment and responsibility."
"In doing so, we hope to raise a society of synthesizers, or those who are able to use the right information at the right time for the right purpose to make the right choices," she added.
According to the PCO Secretary, the campaign will be integrated into the higher education curriculum, community-based training, as well as family-oriented programs.
Meanwhile, the social media platforms will work with government agencies by lending their tools and misinformation and disinformation trainings.
