More than 129,000 commuters have utilized the City of Manila’s "Libreng Sakay" (Free Ride) program as of Sunday night, providing significant financial relief amid an ongoing transport crisis.
Data released by the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) showed that 129,665 passengers were served by 9:30 p.m. on March 30. The initiative aims to mitigate the impact of current transport strikes or shortages affecting the capital’s workforce and residents.
The Manila Public Information Office reported that 1,038 active jeepneys have been deployed across various key routes in the city. While the program is spearheaded by the local government for Manileños, officials noted that commuters from neighboring cities have also benefited from the service.
Some commuters expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that the fare they save is a big help to their finances, as reported by RH Boy Gonzales.
The city government confirmed that the program will continue into its second day on Monday. Authorities expect even higher ridership numbers as the work week begins, promising to maintain the deployment of vehicles across major thoroughfares to ensure minimal disruption for the public.
