The annuals grand procession of the Black Nazarene held every January will be canceled in 2021, Manila City Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso announced Friday. Moreno made the announcement on the Manila Public Information Office Facebook page, stating that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is the reason for the cancellation. Every January 9, millions of Catholic devotees across the country flock to Manila to witness the Traslacion or the grand procession of a centuries-old wooden statue of Jesus Christ from Quirino Grandstand to the Quiapo Church. Earlier this year, the Traslacion made history as the fastest compared to recent years after the image of the Black Nazarene safely returned to Quiapo church after more than 16 hours. Meanwhile, in 2018, the procession lasted for more than 22 hours, the longest in Philippine history.
