A magnitude 5.7 earthquake jolted Pambujan, Northern Samar, on Monday, August 19, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

According to PHIVOLCS, the earthquake, of tectonic origin, occurred at 11:39 a.m. and had a depth of 54 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS observed the following intensities in various areas:

  • Intensity V: Bobon, Catarman, Laoang, Lavezares, Palapag, Rosario, and San Roque, Northern Samar
  • Intensity IV: Pilar and Sorsogon City, Sorsogon
  • Intensity III: Legazpi City and Tabaco City, Albay; Virac, Catanduanes; Masbate City, Masbate; Bulusan and Irosin, Sorsogon; Burauen and Javier, Leyte
  • Intensity II: Calubian, Hilongos, Leyte, and Mahaplag, Leyte; Hinunangan and Sogod, Southern Leyte

Instrumental Intensities:

  • Intensity V: Rosario and San Roque, Northern Samar
  • Intensity IV: Bulusan and Sorsogon City, Sorsogon; Can-Avid, Eastern Samar; Abuyog, Leyte; Gandara, Samar
  • Intensity III: Legazpi City and Tabaco City, Albay; Masbate City and Uson, Masbate; Pilar, Sorsogon; Sulat, Eastern Samar; Alangalang, Carigara, Dulag, and Javier, Leyte
  • Intensity II: Tinambac, Camarines Sur; Aroroy, Batuan, Cataingan, Esperanza, and Milagros, Masbate; Burauen, Calubian, Hilongos, Kananga, Leyte, Mahaplag, and Palo, Leyte; Hinunangan and Sogod, Southern Leyte
  • Intensity I: Caramoan and Pasacao, Camarines Sur; Claveria, Masbate; Roxas City, Capiz; Cebu City, Cebu; Albuera, Leyte

No damage is expected, though aftershocks may occur.

The earthquake was initially reported as a magnitude 6 but was later revised to 5.7.
