Magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolts waters off Surigao del Norte

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the waters off Burgos, Surigao del Norte on Friday, August 29, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The tremor occurred at around 8:44 a.m., approximately 10 kilometers northeast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte, according to Phivolcs data.
The quake, with a tectonic origin, was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs reported intensities in the following areas:
- Intensity III – Hinunangan, Southern Leyte
- Intensity II – Silago and Hinundayan, Southern Leyte

Intensity refers to the strength of the earthquake as perceived by people in the locality.
According to Phivolcs, aftershocks are likely expected.
