A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit the coast off Hinatuan in Surigao deel Sur on Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

In its latest bulletin, the epicenter of the quake was located located 32 kilometers southeast of Hinatuan town — the same area where the magnitude 7.4 tremor took place last month.

PHIVOLCS said it was an aftershock of the massive quake in early December that killed three individuals.

Intensity V was felt at Bislig City in Surigao del Sur at around 9:11 AM while instrumental intensities were felt at the following areas:

  • Intensity III - Bislig City, Surigao del Sur
  • Intensity II - Nabunturan, Davao de Oro
