The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Luzon and Visayas grids under yellow alert on Friday, May 24.

In its latest update, the NGCP said the yellow alert status in Luzon Grid will take effect from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

Its available capacity is 14,548 megawatts, with a peak demand of 13,648 megawatts.

"3 plants have been on forced outage since 2023, 3 between January and March 2024, and 15 power plants between April and May 2024; while 8 are running on derated capacities, for a total of 2,285.5MW unavailable to the grid," said the NGCP.

Meanwhile, the Visayas grid's yellow alert status will be experienced from 12:00 PM until 10:00 PM.

Its available capacity is 2,837 megawatts, with a peak demand of 2,621 megawatts.

"1 plant has been on forced outage since 2022, 2 since 2023, 2 between January and March 2024, and 17 power plants between April and May 2024, while 4 are running on derated capacities, for a total of 685.6 MW unavailable to the grid," the advisory read.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

On Thursday, yellow and red alerts were implemented in the said grids.
