The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is currently deliberating on the possibility of utilizing malls as distribution points for unclaimed license plates.
According to LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, involving malls in the distribution system could expedite the agency's processes and ensure the orderly release of license plates.
He said officials are presently engaging with dealers and malls to iron out the details of this plan.
“We are now looking at the distribution system, kausap natin ‘yung mga dealers, and malls na pwede rin silang point of distribution not necessarily our own district offices kasi baka ma-overwhelm eh,” stated Mendoza.
In line with this initiative, the LTO is contemplating an appointment scheme to facilitate the proper distribution of unclaimed license plates.
"Then we will also start the appointment system. Para ‘yung mga taong gustong kumuha ng plaka ay kailangang mag-appointment pagdating nila doon," the LTO chief said.
The agency's strategy also encompasses the assignment of "mystery applicants" who will verify the information of each applicant and monitor for any irregular transactions.
While these developments are underway, the LTO Chief expressed a desire to transition some of the agency's walk-in transactions to an online platform.
"We will have to shift some of our transactions from walk-in to online. Nandiyan ‘yung app eh, tumatakbo na ‘yan eh, hindi lang natin nagagamit so within this year I hope that we can shift the majority of our transactions to online appointments. Hindi ‘yung walk-in, walk-in lang ‘no," Mendoza stated.
The LTO earlier revealed it has 1.7 million unclaimed license plates in various regional offices but will require 1 million more to clear its backlog.
