To celebrate the 25th anniversary of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. are set to bring Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy back to cinemas with special screenings of the extended editions.
The three films will be shown in D-BOX format from January 16 to 19, followed by standard screenings from January 23 to 25, giving fans multiple chances to experience Middle-earth on the big screen once again.
Alongside the theatrical return, select cinemas will offer exclusive “Lord of the Rings”- themed concession items. AMC theaters will feature collectible popcorn buckets designed with maps of Middle-earth, while Regal and participating local cinemas will carry buckets inspired by the iconic “One Ring.”
When The Fellowship of the Ring debuted in 2001, few could have predicted the massive cultural impact it would have. The trilogy—Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King—went on to redefine fantasy filmmaking. The Return of the King alone earned 11 Academy Awards, cementing the series as both a critical and commercial phenomenon.
The world of Tolkien is now preparing for its next chapter. Warner Bros. Discovery and New Line Cinema are currently developing several new live-action projects set in Middle-earth, following Embracer Group’s acquisition of the franchise rights.
Leading this new era is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, who reprises his connection to the franchise after famously bringing Gollum to life in the original films. Serkis is also producing alongside longtime collaborators Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. The film is slated for release on December 17, 2027, with production scheduled to begin in May 2026.
During a fan event in London, Ian McKellen teased that familiar figures such as Gandalf and Frodo will appear in The Hunt for Gollum, fueling excitement over how the upcoming film will reconnect audiences with beloved characters from the original trilogy.
