Your favorite 2D characters are coming to theaters later this year!
Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli recently partnered with Singapore-based production and distribution company, mm2 Entertainment to rerelease the beloved anime classics from the studio in cinemas across Southeast Asia, over the next five years.
The two companies announced the news on Thursday, October 3, stating that mm2 will release 21 iconic films from Studio Ghibli across Southeast Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and Cambodia.
With the recent partnership, moviegoers can now see favorite classics like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Kiki’s Delivery Service, on the big screen.
Mm2 Asia operates in Singapore and Malaysia and will be distributing the films themselves. For other countries mentioned, the former will be working with partners to make the screening happen.
The Group CEO of mm2 Asia, Chang Long Jong said that Studio Ghibli films are renowned for their ‘worldwide artistry, storytelling, and emotional resonance,’ which, therefore, deserves recognition across age groups.
“This partnership allows us to bring these beloved classics to Southeast Asian audiences, where they can be enjoyed on the big screen as intended. We are confident that this collaboration will introduce a new generation of fans to the world of Studio Ghibli.” CEO Jong said.
Films from the renowned studio company are most known for narrating stories from the mundane lives of ordinary characters, drawn in 2D animation format. Various fans and visitors still flock to see the famous Ghibli Museum and Ghibli Park in Japan.
Miyazaki’s 2023 film ‘The Boy and the Heron’ bagged various awards, such as an Oscars for Best Animated Feature, a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and several others.
