by Mika Jenymae Rasing31 October 2024

Commemorating the dead has been part of the yearly Filipino tradition during the first two days of November. Filipinos plan before the anticipated reunion with loved ones with travel arrangements, re-painting their loved ones' graves, and coordinating with relatives on what to pack.

Whether you’re visiting a public cemetery, a private park, a nicho, or a mausoleum, everyone must take note of the following general reminders for the upcoming Undas this 2024.

Before making sure that all your doors and windows are secured and locked at home, double-check the following:

  • Unplug all appliances and devices
  • Turn off the lights
  • Double-check the gas and other appliances in the kitchen
  • Store your valuables in a safe place

If you’re planning on bringing home-cooked meals or snacks, make sure that enough food is packed for everyone.

Although some people prefer to visit before or after November 1st, there are still a lot of people flocking to visit the graves of their dearly departed on the said day. The following guidelines are for people who will be traveling to cemeteries and parks filled with people:

  • Leave early to avoid rush hours
  • Look for alternative routes to beat the traffic
  • Prepare meet-up places with relatives in case someone gets lost in the crowd

People are also encouraged to follow health and safety protocols such as:

  • Bring a hand sanitizer or wet wipes to sanitize hands
  • Wear a face mask if needed

Meanwhile, to ensure safety, refrain from bringing the following:

  • Firearms and any sharp objects like knives and cutters
  • Any kind of alcoholic beverages
  • Loud sound systems like speakers and microphones
  • Flammable materials like alcohol and thinner
  • Cigarettes and lighters

For those who will be affected by Super Typhoon Leon, take all precautionary measures and avoid places where you may be stranded or harmed. Make sure that you always check for weather updates.
