Leptospirosis cases higher by 11% in 2024
by Jim Fernandez20 September 2024

Leptospirosis cases rose this year, with 4,575 cases recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) from January 1 to September 7. This is 11 percent more than the 4,112 cases during the same period in 2023.

The department noted that deaths were reduced by 17 percent however, with only 393 deaths logged this year, compared to the 475 deaths in the previous one. Moreover, although the total number of cases has increased, the trend of the disease has been dwindling in the past weeks.

“From 1,726 cases reported from July 28 to August 10, 2024, the number decreased by 77 percent to only 396 cases from August 11 to 24, 2024,” the DOH stated.

“In the most recent one to two weeks (August 25 to September 7, 2024), the number has gone down further to just 124,” they added. “But this may change due to incoming reports due to the recent typhoon and inclement weather.”

Only three regions have seen climbing numbers, namely Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, as observed within the last six weeks.

The department applauds the Metro Manila Council for enacting the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Authority Regulation No. 24-003, s. 2024, which does not permit swimming or playing, needless strolling, or any other leisurely activity in floodwaters. They have also warned against such practices.

They also urged the public to maintain good hygiene, properly care for their wounds, put on protective footwear, refrain from contact with floodwaters, and wash exposed skin, so as to lower the risk of contracting leptospirosis.

It is advised for people who have been exposed to floodwaters to seek medical consultation, regardless of the presence of leptospirosis symptoms.
