The Philippines’ most trusted auction house, León Gallery, surpassed its previous world record with Fernando Amorsolo’s ‘Under the Mango Tree’ at the Magnificent September Auction 2024 in Makati City last Saturday, September 14.
The 1929 piece hails from the collection of Edward J. Nell, the industrialist and Father of Philippine Air-conditioning. It was sold for Php57,676,800, inclusive of Buyer’s premium.
The painting was auctioned with a starting rate of PHP48,000,000.
In 2018, Amorsolo’s 1931 piece ‘Mango Gatherers’ was sold for Php46,720,000, setting a groundbreaking record. However, with the recent auction, ‘Under the Mango Tree’ shattered their 2018 record, and is now the most expensive Amorsolo painting sold at the León Gallery auction.
