

Tsutomu Shibayama, former president and CEO as well as chief director of the Doraemon TV series, passed away on March 6, at the age of 84, after a battle with lung cancer, Ajia-do Animation Studio confirmed in a statement.
Shibayama had a prolific career in Japanese animation, directing the “Doraemon” film series for over 20 years and serving as chief director for the long-running TV series.
He also contributed as director and general director to acclaimed shows, including Nintama Rantaro, Chibi Maruko-chan, and Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori, among others. Earlier in his career, he worked on series such as “Dokonjo Gaeru” and “Ganso Tensai Bakabon.”
In a statement, colleagues expressed heartfelt gratitude for Shibayama’s lifetime of creativity, mentorship, and kindness.
“All of us at the company express our heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and warm support you extended to us during your lifetime,” the statement read.
Shibayama’s funeral was held privately with close family, in line with the family’s wishes. The company requested no floral tributes, monetary gifts, or condolence visits.
A public memorial service is planned for a later date, with details to be announced.
