Lawmakers prefer to hear how President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. intends to address pressing issues after confirming earlier that he will just report his administration's achievements so far in his second State of the Nation Address (SONA), which will happen today, July 24.

Albay Rep. Joey Salceda expressed hope that the president, who is also the Agriculture Secretary, will discuss his intentions for the agriculture, energy, industrial, and technology sectors.

He stated that Marcos must consider how to reach "national greatness."

This includes discussing plans to help "agriculture grow by at least 5% every year to catch up with our growing food needs and potentially grow exports, and lower power costs to competitive levels at 7 pesos per kilowatt hour," according to Salceda in a statement issued on Sunday.

He also suggested that Marcos outline how he plans to create more jobs in the manufacturing and export sectors, as well as invest in research and development.

Salceda, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, anticipates Marcos to declare "a move towards fiscal consolidation, with a focus on taxing the wealthy.

Meanwhile, Senator Loren Legarda said she expects Marcos to present the government's plan for "sustainable" COVID-19 pandemic recovery.

She also anticipates the president's views on employment and the environment.

Sen. Chiz Escudero, for one, highlighted that while Marcos "deserves" to report on his accomplishments, the president must also discuss what needs to be done during his term.

This involves the construction of medical facilities and infrastructure, according to Escudero.

Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel agreed but added that the SONA should also address the high cost of living, educational concerns, and the country's reaction to mental health issues.

The senator also wants President Marcos to explain to the public the sugar importation saga, the high price of onions, and the continued operation of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators in the country.
