A legislator has proposed a registry for content creators to combat fake news, as well as the creation of a council to ensure ethical standards are observed.
As with the mandated SIM registration, Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman recommended that social media personalities register to ensure accounts are run by identifiable individuals who can be held accountable in case of any infraction, such as defamation, reported RH 12 Milky Rigonan.
Roman also put forward the formation of a Digital Council of the Philippines, comprising vloggers, digital advertisers, public relations firms, alongside government agencies such as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), with the addition of representatives of social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram (Meta), Tiktok, and YouTube.
“And then this group will come up with their own Code of Ethics and standards that have to be followed. (The council) would also receive complaints from victims of fake news and they will fact-check,” Roman explained.
Roman stressed the importance of monitoring online figures due to their influence, as proven by the high view count amassed by their content.
The congresswoman believes there should be no issue with requiring content creators to register, as traditional media entities undergo accreditation and adhere to policies that regulate their members.
