Bureau of Immigration (BI) officials arrested a Korean national on September 12, who is being sought by his home country on fraud charges.
BI Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Joel Anthony Viado stated that the 56-year-old Korean man, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, was arrested at the agency’s headquarters in Intramuros.
He was intercepted after presenting his new passport at the BI’s Immigration Regulation Division for processing.
The Korean fugitive has an active arrest warrant for aggravated punishment and economic crimes under South Korean laws, issued by the Seoul Jungang District Prosecutor’s Office in 2021.
His name is listed in the Interpol red notice for allegedly embezzling over $1 million USD through fraudulent loan applications.
He was promptly arrested by Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) agents and now faces a deportation case with the BI. The suspect will remain in the BI’s facility at Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig, pending his deportation.
