Farmers in Nueva Vizcaya were complaining over the sudden price drop in tomatoes sold by P7 to P10 per kilo.
According to farmer's leader Hilbert Cumila, tons of tomatoes were thrown away as the locally produced agricultural product from Regions 1 and 2 arrived.
Meanwhile, a netizen named Vivian Faye Baluca Fermantez shared on social media photos of wasted tomatoes thrown in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya.
In response to reports of oversupply in Nueva Vizcaya and Pampanga, the Department of Agriculture (DA) plans to negotiate with hotels and restaurants on buying the excessive supply of tomatoes.
“Dalhin natin sa lugar na mayroon namang kakulangan, ‘yung oversupply sa isang lugar might be beneficial to other regions,” DA Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista.
She also assured that institutional buyers of onion farmers may be linked to lettuce and tomato farmers.
