The Municipality of Kabacan in Cotabato province has been placed under a state of calamity due to flash floods caused by continuous rains.

The declaration was stipulated in Office of the Sangguniang Bayan's Resolution No. 2023-081 dated June 23 and released on June 26.

"Acting on the general welfare of its constituents, this body hereby declares the Municipality of Kabacan under the State of Calamity," the order reads.

The Office of the Sangguniang Bayan also authorized the grant of a 5 percent Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) fund for the Local Government Units (LGUs) and Barangay LGUs hit by the flash flood.

According to the office, 10 low-lying barangays in Kabacan were reportedly affected by flash floods and have been evacuated to evacuation centers.

Among the barangays were Aringay, Kayaga, Salapungan, Poblacion, Malanduague, Bangilan, Bannawag, Kilagasan, Cuyapon, and Magatos.

The resolution was signed by Sanguinan Secretary Rolly Dapun and was attested by Kabacan, Cotabato Vice Mayor Herlo Guzman Jr.

Meanwhile, in a news release, the Provincial Government of Cotabato said over 4,000 families in five barangays in the Municipality Pikit had received relief assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) - Region XII and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

The continuous rains that have been experienced in Cotabato were brought by the Intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and low-pressure Area (LPA), based on the weather monitoring of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday.
