The cases filed against Vice President (VP) Sara Duterte and others are not politically motivated, but a reflection of their duty to uphold fairness in the eyes of the law, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief PGen. Rommel Francisco Marbil clarified on Sunday.
According to Marbil, the PNP will remain committed to its mandate to enforce the law without fear or favor. The former explained that cases filed against any individual, regardless of status or political affiliation, is a reflection of their responsibility as law enforcement. Moreover, Marbil said that their inaction could lead to public distrust.
“If we do not file cases against those accused, what will people say? Takot ang pulis, pang mahirap lang ang pangil ng batas. We cannot allow such perceptions to take root,” Marbil stressed.
“Our duty is to apply the law to everyone, regardless of their standing, because justice is not selective,” he added.
As a reference, the PNP Chief stated how inaction or selective application of the law undermines public trust. He cited ‘tokhang’ criticisms from the previous administration, where victims were perceived to be predominantly poor. Due to that, Marbil expressed how they refuse to let history repeat itself.
“Our laws must be observed, obeyed, and upheld. This is our sworn duty law enforcers. It is not about politics, but about ensuring accountability under the legal framework we all agreed to as a democratic society,” Marbil said.
Marbil assured that legal mechanisms are in place to ensure fairness and due process. He also highlighted how everyone is entitled to defend themselves through these avenues, as it is included in the Constitution.
“As law enforcers, we cannot choose whom to apply the law or make exceptions based on affiliations or relationships. Our mandate is to protect and serve all people equally, without prejudice or discrimination,” Marbil assured.
The PNP Chief called for the public's cooperation to ensure that justice, including the rule of law, will prevail in the country
