Five areas in Luzon have been placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 as Typhoon Jenny, whose international name is Koinu, further intensified over the Philippine sea on Monday, Oct. 2.
In a press briefing, PAGASA Weather Specialist Benison Estareja said Jenny was last tracked 600 kilometers (km) East of Calayan in Cagayan province.
Jenny has 140 km per hour (kph) winds and gusts of up to 170 kph while heading in the northwest direction at the speed of 15 kph.
TCWS No. 1 is hoisted on the following areas:
- Batanes
- Cagayan including Babuyan Islands
- The northern and eastern portions of Isabela (Maconacon, Divilacan, Palanan, Santa Maria, San Pablo, Tumauini, Cabagan, Ilagan City, San Mariano, Santo Tomas)
- Apayao
- the northern portion of Ilocos Norte
According to Estreja, the aforementioned areas and other Northern Luzon areas may later be placed under TCWS No. 2 or TCWS No. 3.
FORECAST TRACK
"Sa susunod na tatlong araw, o ngayong araw hanggang sa Wednesday, ay kikilos pa-hilagang pa-kanluran itong si bagyong Jenny," Estreja said.
He added that the typhoon would make landfall over the southern portion of Taiwan on Thursday morning, Oct. 5 and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) afterward.
The PAGASA weather specialist said the trough of the typhoon is directly affecting many areas of Cagayan Valley, Aurora, and Bicol Region.
He said hoisting TCWS No. 3 is likely over Batanes by Wednesday or Thursday as the center of the eye of Jenny is forecasted to draw near at 220 to 360 km distance.
Estareja also said Jenny would remain in the typhoon category in the next few days.
"At hindi rin natin inaalis ang chance na ito ay umabot sa 160 kilometer per hour or almost a super typhoon, but not quite," Estareja added.
ENHANCED SOUTHWEST MONSOON
Jenny is enhancing the Southwest monsoon or habagat which causes occasional to monsoon rains over the western portions of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao from Monday to Wednesday.
He said heavy rainfall is expected in Batanes, Northern Cagayan including Babuyan Island, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, and Western Visayas today, Monday.
