The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has approved an increase in fares for public utility jeepneys, along with adjustments for Metro Bus, transport network vehicle services (TNVS), and point-to-point (P2P) buses.
Under the approved adjustment, the minimum fare for traditional jeepneys will increase by ₱1, bringing the base fare to ₱14 for the first four kilometers. Meanwhile, passengers of modern jeepneys will pay ₱17 for the same distance, following a ₱2 increase.
The fare adjustment will take effect on Thursday, March 19, according to the LTFRB.
The increase was approved by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) amid rising fuel costs linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
DOTr Acting secretary Giovanni Lopez announced the decision on Tuesday, March 17, confirming that the agency had approved the LTFRB’s recommendation to raise fares for both traditional jeepneys and modern electric jeepneys (e-jeeps).
The fare hike follows a projected surge in petroleum prices. The Department of Energy (DOE) earlier announced that diesel prices could reach ₱114 per liter this week, putting additional pressure on public transport operators.
