Authorities in Tokyo, Japan mistakenly arrested a Filipino man on Saturday for allegedly overstaying his visa, despite being in the process of renewing his residence card.

The unidentified Filipino, who is in his 30s, was approached by an officer at Ueno Station in Tokyo, asking for his residence card; however, it was already expired.

As such, the Filipino technical intern voluntarily went to the police station and told the cops that he forgot to apply for the renewal of his residence card.

Before his arrest, the cop contacted the Immigration Services Agency about the Filipino’s residence status through the Metropolitan Police Department’s section handling international crime.

However, the Filipino was still arrested, even though there was a response that he was in the process of renewing his residence card.

Meanwhile, individuals who are processing the renewal of their resident status are deemed legal residents, and the information usually reflects on their cards; however, the Filipino’s card applied online, so his card did not have the information.

Afterwards, the police released him and offered an apology after he was arrested.
