Two-time PBA Most Valuable Player James Yap will take a break from playing basketball in order to focus on politics.

Yap seeks a second term as councilor of the First District of San Juan City in the upcoming 2025 elections, and he filed his certificate of candidacy on Tuesday, October 8.

Speaking to reporters, the seven-time PBA champion admitted that he had difficulties balancing being a basketball player, and councilor.

Yap said that he will speak with the Blackwater Bossings, his current team in the PBA, regarding his plans.

"Nag-suffer talaga yung basketball ko. Ngayon, focus ako sa politics. Kausapin ko yung management na ayaw ko naman na mag-show up lang ako doon sa basketball, gusto ko rin naman na kundisyon ka," Yap said.

"110 percent focused ako dito sa pagtakbo ko as councilor, sa second term ko," he added.

When asked whether this mean that he will soon retire, Yap did not dismiss the possibility and pointed out that he has played for more than 20 years in the PBA.

"Tignan natin. 20 years na rin. Medyo matagal-tagal na rin," Yap said.
