The Manila Action Lions Club District 301-A3, a civic organization, has donated a library to a public school for indigenous people (IP), specifically an Ati community in the Municipality of Sibalom in Antique province.
In an interview on Tuesday, the school's head Nynivo Esposo said the Villafont Elementary School was chosen as a recipient of the library because of the Lion's Club's advocacy in assisting IP communities.
On January 14, the library was handed over to the school.
The library donation, worth PHP 450,000, was finalized in August 2022 with the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Antique, represented by Superintendent Felisa Beriong, and the Lions Club.
Previously, Esposo stated that the school only uses DepEd textbooks.
The library already has other reference books on Science that the learners could read, said the school head.
The 201 students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 are all Ati children.
Esposo mentioned that the Lion's Club will also be sending more books, television, and laptop after the library turnover.
The donor also contributed PHP50,000 for the bookshelves, tables, and chairs, and other members contributed to the purchase of an electric fan.
The Manila Action Lions Club District 301-A3 is led by Charter President/District Governor Walter Santillan and Club President Modesto Go.
Dr. Elisa Valdez, former council chair and organizer of the Antique-Manila Kinaadman Lions Club, and Governor Rhodora Cadiao assisted in the project's realization.
