The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been asked by Interpol to submit supplemental documents before a decision is made on the Philippines’ request for a red notice against resigned congressman Zaldy Co.
NBI spokesperson Palmer Mallari said the request came from Interpol’s Notices and Diffusions Task Force through the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime. The bureau was given until February 11 to provide additional documents sourced from the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Office of the Ombudsman, and the Sandiganbayan.
Mallari clarified that the initial submission made by the NBI was not deficient, stressing that the request for further documents is part of Interpol’s standard verification process to ensure that the red notice request complies with international requirements.
The red notice application against Co has been pending since November 23, 2025, or for more than two months. Authorities said the extended review indicates that Interpol is carefully evaluating the legal and factual basis of the Philippine government’s request.
A red notice is an international alert issued by Interpol to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
Co is facing multiple graft and malversation charges filed before the Sandiganbayan in connection with alleged irregularities in flood control projects. He has reportedly gone into hiding following the filing of the cases.
The NBI said it is coordinating closely with concerned agencies to meet the February 11 deadline and complete the documentary requirements needed for Interpol’s assessment of the red notice request.
