The International Criminal Court (ICC) will resume its investigation regarding the previous administration’s “war on drugs” after it denied the Philippine government’s appeal on the case.
During an open court hearing in The Netherlands on Tuesday, July 18, Presiding Judge Marc Perrin de Brichambaut announced that they have denied the Philippines’ appeal.
On the other hand, Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra responded that the Philippines can no longer file an appeal against the ICC’s decision.
He earlier said the ICC could also indict certain individuals over killings in the drug war if there is sufficient evidence.
Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, however, said the country will not comply if the ICC issues an arrest warrant against individuals over killings in the drug war.
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also stated that the Chamber has no jurisdiction in the Country.
Based on government records, At least 6,200 suspects were killed in police operations in the war on drugs under the leadership of Former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Human rights organizations assert that the true death toll may range from 12,000 to 30,000.
