Meta Platforms, Inc., the American multinational technology conglomerate that owns Facebook and Instagram, has officially launched a new social media application called Threads.
In a video posted on his Facebook account, Meta chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg announced that the Threads app is now available at all mobile application stores worldwide.
"Meet Threads, an open and friendly public space for conversation. It takes the best parts of the Instagram experience, creates a whole new application around text, ideas, and discussing what's on your mind," he said.
Zuckerberg said users can sign in to Threads using their Instagram account and all their Instagram followers are already there.
"I'm looking to forward to build a big and friendly community that I think we all want to see in the world," the Meta CEO said.
The function of Threads is similar to the Twitter app.
Just like Twitter, you can read, like, and repost all the threads that you and your Instagram friends have posted.
You can also comment in the thread posted by your friends.
Everyone can also share photos and videos on their account.
But the design of Threads is very much alike to Instagram, particularly the buttons below the application.
You can still see how many likes and comments that your post has gained in the heart-shaped button and you can view your individual profile in the human-shaped button.
The home and search buttons are also placed in the same spot, similar to Instagram.
Meta launched Threads amidst the controversial changes in Twitter such as temporary limits on the number of tweets that a user will be able to read per day and limiting TweetDeck for verified users only.
