Chinese maritime activity near Ayungin Shoal has intensified, according to a recent report from RH Edniel Parrosa, citing the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
The AFP confirmed sightings of several Chinese vessels and aircraft near the grounded BRP Sierra Madre, a Philippine Navy outpost, on August 20. Spotted in the area were at least five China Coast Guard (CCG) ships, 11 fast boats, and nine Chinese maritime militia vessels. The military also reported monitoring two aerial assets: a Chinese drone and a helicopter.
According to the AFP, some of the fast craft and inflatable boats that were carrying armed personnel attempted to approach the Sierra Madre, but were intercepted and repelled by Filipino troops using rubber boats.
Photos released by the AFP show a Chinese CCG vessel appearing to conduct water cannon exercises, while maritime militia were seen dropping fishing nets within the area.
AFP Public Affairs Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad stated that the military continues its maritime domain awareness efforts to track and report all activities in the West Philippine Sea.
