Senator Imee Marcos, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation presented her proposal to extend barangay officials' term to 6 years.
Under Senate Bill 2629 filed by Marcos last April 8, the term of office of all elected barangay officials shall be 6 years and no elective official must serve for more than 2 consecutive terms in the same position.
Marcos said that the current term of three years is not enough for barangay officials to plan and execute projects for their constituents.
"The present term of three years is far too short for these officials to see their own projects through, since they spend the greater portion of their terms implementing the policies and projects of the National Government and as well as those of the city, municipal, or provincial government units," Marcos mentioned in the explanatory note of the bill.
Citing the P11B budget allocation for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, the bill also aims to lessen government expenses.
The senator presented the proposal to barangay officials from over 142 barangays in Quezon City.
