The 1999 cult classic “10 Things I Hate About You” was (and still is) a defining pop culture moment for all the teens and rom-com lovers. After all, who could ever forget Heath Ledger’s iconic rendition of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You? Or maybe THE poem that gave the film its title?

Nearly thirty years later, the film continues to be referenced across generations. However, it wasn’t until Wednesday, April 23, that the film got people gushing about it loudly.

Yesterday, singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen announced that she will be co-writing the music for the musical adaptation of “10 Things I Hate About You.” On Instagram, she shared a photo of a music sheet with a bright yellow sticky note of the title.

“I can tell you 10 things I’m excited about right now or just skip to number one which is working on this dream project with this dream team!” Jepsen captioned her post.

Jepsen will write the music and lyrics alongside singer-songwriter and producer Ethan Gruska. However, this is not the first time that Jepsen and Gruska have collaborated on a project. The two previously worked together for Jepsen’s studio album, “The Loveliest Time.”

Apart from the singer, Gruska had also worked with artists like Bon Iver and Phoebe Bridgers.

For those unaware, this isn’t Jepsen’s first Broadway project. In 2014, she took over the title role in the Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. A few years later, she played Frenchy Facciano in Fox’s Emmy-winning Grease: Live!

However, this upcoming musical marks the first time the “Your Type” singer will work from behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, acclaimed writer and director Lena Dunham will co-write the book with playwright Jessica Huang.

The musical will be directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, a former New York City Ballet resident choreographer who went on to direct and choreograph two Tony-winning musicals.

The iconic teen rom-com released in 1999, is based on William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew," starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik.

It became a box office hit and quickly gained cult status for its witty examination of the Stratford sisters’ teenage life and sisterhood in a 1990s Seattle suburb.

The opening date and theater for the upcoming musical have yet to be announced.
