The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) condemned on Saturday the "treacherous and cold-blooded killing" of Assistant City Prosecutor (ACP) Edilberto Mendoza on December 31.
In a statement, the IBP said it is "appalled" by the ACP's slay and called for a "nationwide effort" to protect lawyers and judges across the country.
"The Integrated Bar of the Philippines is saddened and appalled by the treacherous and cold-blooded killing of Assistant City Prosecutor Edilberto Mendoza," the association said.
"The IBP once again calls for a nationwide effort to protect our lawyers and judges. We cannot ignore the disturbing and increasing frequency of lawyer killings," it added.
"We will not stand idly by and watch as many more of our brethren are attacked and murdered."
Mendoza, on the last day of 2021, was gunned down by an unidentified individual outside his home, with his killer fleeing on foot.
His death makes him the 66th lawyer who have been killed under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.
The IBP also extended its condolences to the bereaved family of Mendoza, who it said was also an "active and supportive" member of IBP Cavite.
The association said that it will "endeavor to immediately process the release of the IBP benefits due to his heirs."
"It will likewise assist in, and monitor the investigation and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law," the IBP added.
It further called on authorities to address the rising attacks against their industry, and urged them to "formulate and implement specific measures" to protect lawyers, judges, and prosecutors.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra previously said that he has already directed the National Bureau of Investigation to find the suspect behind the crime.
