by Mary Antalan22 January 2024

Davao de Oro 1st District Rep. Maria Carmen Zamora on Sunday, January 21, said she will report an assessment detailing the effects of the shearline-induced flooding in Davao region to the House leadership once sessions resume.

"I will personally report to the Speaker pagbalik sa session and inform him doon sa extent ng mga damages and we will see, we will lobby on how our national agencies can help para maalalayan naman 'yung ating mga kababayan," she said in an interview during DZRH Isyung Pambayan.

Zamora said they are still collecting data on the amount of damage especially in infrastructure and agriculture.

The lawmaker appealed to the Department of Agriculture to focus on extending aids to farmers as the flood caused extensived damaged to their crops.

According to Zamora, the flooding severely damaged the Municipality of Compostela which is the rice granary of the Davao region, affecting the livelihoods of local farmers.

"Concern talaga natin on agriculture kasi 'yan yung long term. Kailangan nating maalalayan 'yung ating mga farmers. So sa Department of Agriculture, syempre bago pa, and I understand hindi rason yung wala tayong pondo kasi kakasimula pa lang ng taon. So I hope the DA can focus also on their intervention doon sa agricultural challenges na hinaharap ng ating mga farmers," Zamora said.

Meanwhile, the chamber released P35 million for aid including the distribution of 17,500 food packs in seven districts in the Davao Region affected by flooding and landslides.

The funding came from the offices of House Speaker Romualdez and Tingog Partylist Representatives Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre.
