Alex Eala’s inspiring run at the Philippine Women’s Open came to a close on Thursday as the Filipino wild card and second seed fell 4-6, 4-6 to fifth-seeded Camila Osorio of Colombia at a packed center court on Thursday, January 29 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Eala battled fiercely from the first point, exchanging breaks and pushing Osorio in a high-stakes quarterfinal that saw momentum swing back and forth, particularly in the second set.
Despite her relentless effort, it was Osorio who proved steadier in the key moments, converting six of her 12 break-point opportunities to clinch the win in straight sets.
The full-house crowd, visibly dismayed at the hometown favorite’s exit, applauded Eala for her grit and determination, cheering her off the court. At the same time, fans also acknowledged Osorio’s resilience, giving the Colombian a warm round of applause for her performance.
“I hope you guys get inspired and grow to love tennis,” Eala told fans after the loss. “I love tennis so much, and I’m so lucky that I’m able to share these experiences and journey with all of you.”
Osorio praised Eala’s fight on court, calling her “an amazing fighter and competitor” and expressing hope for future matchups. She also commended the Filipino crowd for their passion and support.
With the victory, Osorio moves on to the semifinals, while Eala exits the tournament having once again captured the hearts of local fans and reaffirmed her role as the standard-bearer of Philippine tennis.
After the Philippine Women’s Open, Eala is set to compete at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open 2026, scheduled from February 1 to 7.
